Professional home automation is all the rage now, and for some time it has no longer been only for large-scale projects. In private dwellings too, builders are increasingly embracing the benefits of BUS systems that allow for the incorporation of automated roller shutters or Venetian blinds. The same challenges always occur during the planning stage: The solutions need to be energy-efficient and convenient, high-quality and also impressively cost-effective. It is crucial for people to be able to rely on high quality standards that provide the maximum possible degree of flexibility as well as security in terms of planning and investment.
As one of the leading suppliers of drive and control systems, we have already made great strides towards developing a standard along these lines together with other committed companies: SMI technology.
The solution that many European manufacturers are already putting their faith in: SMI (Standard Motor Interface) – a standard interface for electronic drives for the roller shutter and sun protection sector. The advantage of SMI drives: They are compatible with one another and are also extremely easy to integrate into building automation networks, e.g. KNX.
With the right actuator, between 8 and 16 drives can be connected in parallel depending on the application. This significantly reduces the amount of installation work, and therefore also the overall costs. The drive and control unit are connected via a 5-core lead that ensures a reliable power supply and data transfer – over a distance of up to 350 metres. It is no problem to move the controlled unit with precision to intermediate positions, and querying its current position is likewise straightforward.
With SMI you are putting your faith in a practical, economical and robust system that satisfies the most stringent criteria for convenience and energy efficiency – it's as simple as that!
The SMI-easyMonitor software program makes possible the operation, parameterisation and addressing of drives with an SMI interface.
"SMI EasyMonitor" allows the bus function of the installation to be checked easily (knowledge of the higher-level building system is not necessary). It is necessary to disconnect the bus connector from the KNX side of the actuator for this purpose.
When the SMI interface module is installed, the corresponding driver is automatically downloaded and installed by Windows Update. If automatic installation is not possible, you can download the necessary FTDI driver from the FTDI homepage.
